Downgraded and Upcycled:
A Museum Studies Seminar Exhibition
about Legacy Media
The first exhibition that I worked on, Downgraded and Upcycled, was unconventional because it was borne out of a donation of 10,000 VHS tapes to University of Richmond Museums (URM). In the first half of the gallery, the audience is presented with deconstructed VHS (Video Home System) tapes and informational panels defining legacy media. In the second portion, visitors are invited to experience legacy media: a VHS tape plays through static noise, which seems charming in retrospect, and a record spins under the needle, producing a type of sound that we don’t physically feel much anymore.
Professor Schlatter honored me a Book Award for class leadership in my work on this exhibition at the Spring 2018 Art History Department Banquet.
